Class 4 is the highest impact rating a shingle can earn — it survives a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet without cracking. That's roughly the energy of serious hail. In a state where hail is a question of when, not if, these shingles deserve a hard look.
The upside
Dramatically better hail survival means fewer claims, fewer deductibles paid, and less of the insurance rate pressure that follows claims. Many Texas insurers offer meaningful premium discounts for certified Class 4 roofs — ask your agent for their specific number, because it varies. And the shingles themselves are simply built heavier, which also helps with wind.
The honest caveats
Class 4 doesn't mean hail-proof; a violent enough storm damages anything. Some insurers in hail-heavy zip codes now offer discounts but exclude cosmetic damage on impact-rated roofs — read that endorsement before you buy. And the upcharge over standard architectural shingles is real, typically a moderate percentage of the roof cost.
Our take
If you're already replacing a roof in the Brazos Valley, the upgrade usually pays for itself over the roof's life through insurance savings and avoided deductibles. If your current roof is healthy, it's not worth replacing early just to get Class 4.
