Texas doesn't require a state license to be a roofer. That means the burden of picking a good one falls on you — and after every big storm, the difference between a real roofing company and a truck with a magnetic sign becomes very expensive for somebody.
What to insist on
A real local address you can drive to — not a P.O. box. Proof of general liability and workers' comp insurance; if a crew member gets hurt on your property and the roofer isn't insured, that can become your problem. A written workmanship warranty separate from the manufacturer's material warranty. Local references and reviews with history, not a page that appeared last month. And a detailed written scope: tear-off, decking, underlayment, flashing, ventilation, cleanup — not a one-line “roof replacement” quote.
Red flags to walk away from
Anyone offering to waive or “handle” your insurance deductible — that's illegal in Texas and tells you how they operate. Pressure to sign today. A bid dramatically lower than everyone else's; the money comes out of materials or labor you can't see. Out-of-state plates and a promise they'll “be around” for warranty work.
