What a radiant barrier actually does
Ordinary decking absorbs solar radiation and re-radiates it into your attic like a broiler element. A radiant barrier - a reflective aluminum layer laminated to the decking or draped beneath it - reflects up to 97% of that radiant heat back out. Attics that hit 145 degrees under bare decking run 110-120 with a barrier: less load on ductwork, insulation, and the AC compressor cycling below.
When it is worth the money - and when it is not
Best case: single-story or large-attic homes with HVAC and ducts in the attic, replacing the roof anyway - radiant-barrier decking adds modestly to material cost during replacement. Weak case: homes with conditioned attics, ducts in the slab, or heavy tree shade. The barrier also does nothing for hail resistance - it is a comfort and efficiency play, not armor.
The right install order

Do radiant barriers work in winter?
Their winter effect is minor in Texas - the main value is summer heat rejection, which is where Texas energy bills live anyway.
Radiant barrier vs. more insulation - which first?
If attic insulation is below R-38, insulation first: it is cheaper per unit of savings. At healthy insulation levels, the barrier is the better next dollar.
Can I staple up foil myself?
DIY draped foil works but commonly blocks soffit airflow or tears. During reroofing, barrier decking installs cleanly with zero added labor later.
