The Texas Homeowner's Guide to Roof Insurance Claims

The Texas Homeowner's Guide to Roof Insurance Claims

Filing a roof claim shouldn't require a law degree, but it helps to know how the process works before you start. Here's the honest version we walk every client through.

Step 1: Get an inspection before you file

Don't file blind. If a storm hit your area, get a free professional inspection first. If the damage doesn't justify a claim, you'll want to know before it's on your record.

Step 2: Document everything

Your claim lives or dies on documentation. We photograph every hail bruise, wind crease, and damaged component, and put it in a report your insurer can't argue with.

Step 3: Meet the adjuster on the roof

You're allowed to have your contractor present when the insurance adjuster inspects — and you should. We meet adjusters on-site to make sure nothing gets missed or minimized.

Step 4: Understand your numbers

Know your deductible (in Texas, you must pay it — a contractor offering to “waive” it is breaking the law), and understand the difference between the first check (actual cash value) and the recoverable depreciation paid after work is complete.

Watch the clock

Most Texas policies give you roughly a year from the storm date to file, and damage gets harder to attribute the longer you wait. If you suspect damage, start with a free inspection this week, not next season.
