Clear the gutters
Full gutters hold water against your fascia, and when that water freezes it expands. Clean gutters are the cheapest roof insurance there is.
Check your flashing and pipe boots
Most winter leaks don't come through shingles — they come through cracked pipe boots and loose flashing around chimneys and vents. These are five-minute fixes when caught early.
Look at your attic, not just your roof
Warm, moist indoor air condensing in a cold attic can mimic a roof leak. Make sure attic insulation isn't blocking soffit vents, and that bathroom fans vent outside, not into the attic.
Trim overhanging limbs
Ice-loaded branches snap. A limb that scrapes your shingles in October punches through them in an ice storm.
